BRIMS opened in 1994 with only 20 exhibits. Today it has nearly 50 unique hands-on exhibits for all ages. All displays feature a "What To Do" and "What's Going On" explanation to help visitors learn and understand exhibits.
Tour guides are on hand to explain displays and answer questions, however patrons are encouraged to also explore and discover on their own. Here are some examples of the museum's exhibit collection and what it has to offer visitors

Duck-in Kaleidoscope

This exhibit consists of three plate glass mirrors jointed to form a triangle. (Mirrors are polished surfaces which form images by the reflection of light rays. The "looking glass" which we look into as we comb our hair is usually a glass plate coated with silver to made a good light reflection surface).



Mirrors produce reverse images as you lookin to them. (This is known as the "mirror image"). In this exhibit the three mirrors produce multiple images, some reversing the "mirror image" so that you can see yourself as others see you.

The perception
of color is the result of the stimulation of the retina of the eye by light
waves of different length. In a television set, red, blue and green colors are
used to make all the other colors which you see as you watch your favorite show.
In this exhibit, red, blue and green lights shines on the wall. By moving from
one side to the other a varied mixture of colors is acheived.

The ancient scientists thought that all matter was composed of four elements: earth, fire, wind and air. We now know that this is not true. Air, the envelope which encircles our planet is made up of a complex mixture of gases. When compressed, it exerts physical force which can be given direction.



In this exhibit, the striking of the rubberized sheet at the back of the exhibit compresses air within the chamber.It takes about two seconds for the air to become organized within the chamber.It is then expelled in a column of air which
holds its shape for considerable distance.

The Hand Battery

Plates of different metals react with chemicals in your hands to produce an electrical current. In this exhibit the aluminum and copper plates react through your body to produce a very weak current as recorded on the meter. If you touch both aluminum plates or both copper plates nothing will happen. The important lesson of this exhibit is the fact that different metals react differently with the chemicals in your hand, resulting in the creation of a positive charge on one plate and a negative charge on the other.

The purpose of this activity is to introduce students to the concept of energy and various ideas corresponding to energy. Students pedal a stationary bike which in turn is used to light an electrical circuit. The exhibit deals with the conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy.

Reaction Timer

How fast do you react?
This exhibit measures the time it takes for a signal to the brain (visual or audible) to result in physical reaction. Normally, patience will improve the individuals reaction time.
